This page explains what information TheMacPost collects when you visit, why, and what you can do about it. We collect as little as we can.
Reading the site
You can read every story on TheMacPost without an account. To count how many times a story is read, the site records one view per page load. That count stores no cookies, no IP address and nothing that identifies you.
Our fonts and author photos are stored on our own server, so loading a page doesn’t send your details to font or avatar services.
Hosting and security
TheMacPost is hosted by Rocket.net, and traffic passes through Cloudflare’s network. Like any web server, these services keep short-term technical logs, such as IP addresses and browser types, to deliver pages and block attacks. We use that information only to keep the site running and secure.
Comments
When you leave a comment, we store the name, email address and website you enter, the comment itself and your IP address. Your email address is never shown publicly. Comments are checked for spam by Akismet, a service run by Automattic, which receives the comment and the details above for that purpose. If you leave a comment, your browser may also save your name and email in a cookie so you don’t have to type them again next time. You can turn that off by leaving the box unticked.
Videos
YouTube videos in our stories don’t load until you press play. Until then, YouTube receives nothing from your visit. Once you play a video, YouTube’s own privacy policy applies.
Affiliate links
When you click an affiliate link, for example to Amazon, the store may set its own cookie to record that you came from TheMacPost. That’s how we earn a commission. The store’s privacy policy covers what it collects.
Advertising
If we show ads from an ad network, that network may use cookies to measure and personalise ads. Before any such ads appear, we’ll update this page to name the network and, where the law requires it, ask for your consent first.
Emails you send us
Emails to our @themacpost.com addresses are forwarded to our inbox, which is hosted by Google. We use your message only to reply to you and, for tips, to report the story. We won’t share a tipster’s identity without permission.
Sharing your information
We don’t sell your personal information, and we don’t share it except with the services named on this page or when the law requires us to.
How long we keep it
Comments and the details that come with them stay as long as the comment is on the site. Spam and deleted comments are removed automatically. Server logs are kept only as long as our hosts need them for security.
Your choices and rights
You can ask us to show you, correct or delete the personal information we hold about you, including your comments. Depending on where you live, you may have further rights under laws such as the GDPR or California’s privacy laws. Email us and we’ll respond within 30 days.
Children
TheMacPost isn’t aimed at children under 13, and we don’t knowingly collect their information.
Changes
When we change this policy, we’ll update the date below.
