Artificial intelligence left the research lab for good in November 2022, when OpenAI released ChatGPT and a race began between OpenAI, Google, Anthropic, Meta and a wave of newer labs to build ever more capable models.

Apple joined late: it announced Apple Intelligence in 2024, struggled to deliver a smarter Siri, and in January 2026 agreed a multi-year deal to base its next models on Google’s Gemini. The rebuilt Siri finally arrived with iOS 27 in September 2026.
