The large language models behind today’s AI grew out of Google’s transformer research in 2017 and went mainstream with ChatGPT in 2022.

Since then OpenAI’s GPT, Google’s Gemini, Anthropic’s Claude and Meta’s Llama have been joined by fast-moving open-weight models from labs like DeepSeek and Mistral, with new versions arriving every few months. Apple’s own Foundation Models now build on Gemini.
