The Dynamic Island on the OLED MacBook Pro does more than your iPhone’s

Apple announced the new MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display recently, and instead of a notch, it now comes with the Dynamic Island, the same one you would find on the iPhone. It’s a first for the Mac, but it does more than the Dynamic Island on the iPhone.

The Dynamic Island is the home for Spotlight, which means that you can search your Mac right from the top of the screen. Siri AI lives in the Dynamic Island too, and you can ask a question without opening anything.

You can also access Live Activities like timers, music, deliveries and calls at a glance. You can easily touch it to control music or answer a call directly from the Dynamic Island.

If you’re asking why it does more, on iPhone, the Dynamic Island mostly shows what’s happening behind the scenes. On the Mac, it’s where you go to search and ask Siri, so you start things from it. You can tap it directly to pause a song or accept an AirDrop, with the keyboard and trackpad still right there. Lastly, the bigger screen gives it more headroom for the interface to expand and show more information than on the iPhone.

The notch only took up space, and the Dynamic Island has actually added to the functionality of the Mac. For now, only the MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display has the feature, and Apple hasn’t made it clear if it will be coming to the rest of the lineup.
