TrendForce expects Apple to ship between 1.2 and 1.5 million PROLED XDR MacBook Pro models in 2027. There are two reasons why the shipments could slow down, and they mainly boil down to the $2,899 price and the cheaper mini-LED 14-inch model still on sale.
The OLED MacBook Air, on the flip side, is now expected in 2029, pushed back from 2027, as was originally reported. LG Display, BOE and TCL CSOT are competing to make its panels. Apple does wait with new technology before bringing it to other product categories, and when it does, it’s also a wee bit inferior to the original.
Apple joining Lenovo, HP and ASUS should push the industry toward OLED displays from LCD, even for laptops in the sub-$1,000 category. Altogether, OLED laptops are expected to grow by about 40 percent a year, reaching 46.6 million shipments by 2030.
1.5 million shipments is a premium first step into the market, but the real moment for OLED on the Mac is the MacBook Air.
