Apple’s first foldable iPhone is now on sale, and it’s available in the US, China, India, Japan, South Korea and several other markets, starting at $1,999. Another 28 regions will get the device next week on October 30.
The base model, which the $1,999 price is for, will buy you 256GB of storage, with 512GB, 1TB and 2TB options above it. It comes in two color options, Star White and Night Sky, and it’s eSIM-only worldwide. For comparison, the iPhone 18 Pro Max starts at $1,299, so the Duo costs $700 more.
What you’re getting
Closed, the iPhone Duo’s display measures 5.4 inches, and when it’s opened, it becomes a 7.6-inch screen with a matte nano-texture finish. Apple says the finish cuts reflections and hides the crease, an obvious choice for a foldable which the industry didn’t take into account before. It’s powered by the same A20 Pro chip as the iPhone 18 Pro, and Apple claims 24 hours of mixed use.
Unfolded, the device is 5.2mm thick, which makes it the thinnest iPhone Apple has ever made. iOS 27 borrows Split View from the iPad, so two apps can share the bigger internal screen. You also have the option to use the bottom half of the screen as a keyboard in a laptop-style fold.
What you’re giving up
The compromises are real, as the company had to make choices that go way beyond your everyday iPhone. There’s no Face ID, thanks to the thinness of the device. Touch ID is built into the side button instead, and early reviewers have flagged that as the hardest change to get used to. There’s no telephoto camera either, just two 48MP cameras for the main and ultra-wide shots, and no Action button.
It’s also heavy, weighing in at 254 grams, partly because of the hinge mechanism that joins the two sides of the fold. Folded, the Duo is 11.3mm thick, which also makes it the thickest iPhone in years. Apple has also promised that Apple Pencil support will be coming to the foldable, and it will work on both the inner and outer displays. We will see the support land by the end of this year.
What comes next
Apple is already working on the biggest complaints users had with review units and early adopters. iPhone Duo 2 prototypes are being tested with Face ID under the outer screen, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. It appears that Touch ID was a first-generation trade-off rather than a permanent one.
You can buy the iPhone Duo now from Apple and major carriers, including AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon. Apple’s $79 Duo Case and $129 Duo Folio with Kickstand are also available.
